Jazz
2 - 4 pm

Jay Arms began playing guitar in 2003 when he enrolled in group guitar lessons at Los Medanos College with Mike Williams. The following year he enrolled in private guitar lessons with Chris Meek and later with Mike Williams as well. During this time, Jay focused his practicing on rock and jazz styles on electric guitar while developing a solo repertoire on that instrument. In 2008, upon his transfer to the University of California Santa Cruz, he began to study classical guitar with Mesut Özgen. The following summer he took lessons from David Dueñas and started to develop solo classical pieces to audition for UCSC's Bachelors of Music program, to which he gained acceptance in December of 2009. Jay presented his senior recital on April 27th, 2011 for which he received honors from the music department. Jay graduated from UC Santa Cruz with highest honors in the major and is currently working to record his first CD. He is currently a Ph.D student at UC Santa Cruz studying Historical Musicology.
